WBENC LIFT officially launched the Entrepreneur Financial Readiness (EFR) program, brought to you by MassMutual and Wells Fargo, in March with its kickoff session “Accelerate Small Business Growth with Acquisition Readiness,” bringing entrepreneurs together for a candid and practical discussion on how intentional growth planning, strategic relationships, and early M&A preparation can significantly increase long-term enterprise value.
When asked how they were growing their business, most respondents reported relying primarily on organic growth (67%), with a smaller portion (22%) pursuing strategic partnerships or joint ventures. These responses reflect the uncertainty many founders feel about long-term growth and transition. Nearly half have considered selling or exiting their business in the future, while others remain unsure or are not actively planning an exit.
To help attendees navigate strategic growth options and begin mapping a future transition, the session featured expert instruction from:

- Louise Kennedy, Founding Attorney at West Hill Technology Counsel, with decades of extensive experience advising companies on intellectual property, strategy and relationship building.
- Ashwini Vasudeva, Partner and Co-Founder of Astute, with 25 years of experience spanning Big 4 public accounting and global corporations, helping organizations strengthen financial strategy, improve operational performance, and navigate complex regulatory and compliance environments.
They were joined by a panel of WBENC-Certified small and midsized business leaders who have successfully navigated strategic growth and relationships leading to an acquisition.
Together, instructors and panelists worked together to demystify strategic relationships, including mergers and acquisitions.
- Growth and Exit Are One Strategy
- Growth decisions should always be made with eventual transition or exit in mind. Treating growth and exit as a single continuum—rather than separate events—allows founders to build value intentionally and maintain control over future options.
- Use Strategic Growth Paths to Match Business Stage
- Strong businesses balance organic growth with inorganic growth, such as strategic relationships, joint ventures, or acquisitions. Strategic relationships can accelerate expansion and reduce risk, often serving as a steppingstone to acquisition without immediate complexity.
- Readiness Is Built
- Successful M&A outcomes are the result of years of preparation. Clean financials, documented processes, reduced owner dependency, and strong governance signal credibility to buyers and partners and directly influence valuation beyond top-line revenue.
- Discipline Drives Valuation and Optionality
- Enterprise value reflects predictability and professionalism—strong Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBITDA), consistent cash flow, and operational independence from the founder. Exit readiness creates optionality, giving owners flexibility to pursue partnerships, continued growth, or a transaction on their own terms.
- Engage Advisors Early to Avoid Costly Missteps
- Legal and financial advisors play a critical role before any deal. Early guidance helps align structure, governance, and strategy with long-term goals and helps prevent mistakes that can erode value or derail future transactions.

93% percent of participants reported stronger understanding and confidence around the business, financial, and legal elements that support organic growth.
These outcomes demonstrate how the WBENC LIFT Entrepreneur Financial Readiness program builds the foundational knowledge and confidence necessary for small business owners to explore growth options with greater clarity and intent. As one attendee shared,
“The Accelerate Small Business Growth with Acquisition Readiness session was both insightful and encouraging…Their perspective made the path to growth and acquisition readiness feel much more tangible for small businesses like ours.”
