The WBENC team is an active group. When we’re not planning events, managing programs, or assisting WBEs and Corporate Members, you will often find us out and about at area events and conferences to network, promote WBENC, and support women entrepreneurs.
Last month, WBENC Marketing & Communications Manager, Nettie Schmidt, attended the National Women’s Business Council (NWBC) Women in Small Business Roundtable in Austin, Texas. This event, as part of the NWBC Small Business Roundtable Series, was focused on access to capital.

WHY WE WENT:
The National Women’s Business Council (NWBC) is on of WBENC’s partners in supporting and advocating for women entrepreneurship. Their Small Business Roundtable Series featuring events across the country engages local communities on topics to better understand challenges and opportunities for women business owners. The event in Austin focused on access to capital and funding and the challenges and opportunities for women entrepreneurs in the space.
With a panel of NWBC members moderating, and a group of investors, business owners, and non-profit advocates in discussion, the audience was able to hear and engage in conversation with many different perspectives on the challenges and opportunities surrounding accessing capital that women in business face. Rebecca Contreras, NWBC Council Member and Austin-native, noted “women only receive 4.4% of small business commercial loans, despite the fact that women pay back their micro loans at a 97% rate of return".
In the back of the room, an artist recorded the topics through illustration on a large sheet bringing an element of entertainment and summary to the discussion. Check out the end product below.
