WBE Keys to Success: Surrounding Yourself with Positive People

Who doesn’t like to be surrounded by positivity? By intentionally thinking on the bright side, we have the ability to change our mood, our interactions, maybe even our entire day. But could positivity also be a business asset?

Lynn Perenic, President & CEO of Argent Tape and Label, thinks so. At a panel discussion with the 2018 Women’s Business Enterprise Stars, Lynn said surrounding herself with positive people is one of the keys to her business success.

In March of 2018, Lynn was honored as a 2018 WBE Star, the nation's premier award for excellence among Women’s Business Enterprises (WBEs), a testament to her strategic vision, business acumen and sheer talent. Her company Argent Tape and Label has won multiple awards, including top 50 Businesses to Watch in MI, Crain’s Cool Places to Work, and a finalist in the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of The Year award. Lynn’s persistence and dedication to excellence has Argent Tape and Label poised for continued success for many years to come.

Clearly Lynn’s strategy around positivity has worked for her and her company’s success, and as research shows, she is not alone. People naturally tend to replicate the behaviors and moods of who they are socializing with. In a recent article in the New York Times called the Power of Positive People, author and National Geographic fellow Dan Buettner noted that positive friendships are a common theme in what he calls “blue zones,” or regions of the world where people tend to have longer lifespans. Living longer, and being happier, are both good motivators to seek out positive people to surround yourself with, both professionally and personally.

Kayla Matthews, the author of the website Productivity Theory expands on this in her post, “The Benefits of Surrounding Yourself with Positive Energy.” She writes:

“Negative emotions hold an essential place in emotional processing and personal growth, but too much negative energy hangs like a cloud. Soon, it affects how you see yourself and lead your daily life. Surrounding yourself with positive energy lightens the burden and reminds you of the joy in your life.”

In business and in life, we all experience sadness, troublesome times, loss, and grief. The important part is to not let those emotions become your norm, as that can affect your own productivity and happiness, but also that of those around you. (If you need some inspiration on how to spark some positive energy, Kayla provides great tips on how to “bring the sparkle back” into life.)

As Lynn notes, staying positive, and surrounding yourself with positive people, is really about ensuring you can focus on the possibilities before you, allowing you to stay creative and innovative — two very important traits for a business owner trying to stay ahead of the competition.
