President's Message from
Pamela Prince-Eason

Strategic Vision and Operational Excellence

In the April 2011 Edition of the President's Report, I shared that all of us here at WBENC have three critical areas of focus during my first 90 days leading this organization.

Critical Areas of Focus
April – June 2011
  1. Review our internal operational processes to ensure Execution of Excellence in WBENC operations, including flawless delivery throughout the network;
  2. Draft a Strategic Plan outline for review with our Executive Committee, the WBENC Board of Directors, our Regional Partner Organizations (RPOs), and our Women's Enterprise Leadership Forum; and
  3. Support our staff and suppliers to create a successful National Conference & Business Fair in Las Vegas, June 21-23.

I am proud to share the status of the progress we have made in the past 30 days and to update you on some of the changes that I believe you may have already noticed.

The WBENC staff and RPOs have been outstanding partners in bringing me up to speed on operational details that impact everything from internal accounting to customer service to important non-profit and government guidelines.

I have segregated everything we currently do into the following categories:

  1. Items we can change immediately or in the short term,
  2. Items that require important work prior to the 2012 budget process, and
  3. Items that must tie into our new Strategic Plan and "WBENC's Roadmap to 2020."

We have reviewed work responsibilities to better define accountability and are beginning to shift our resource base to focus on the priorities driven by our mission, vision and COR values. As a result, there was an immediate need to shift resources and direct work centered on certification so that we could maintain our high certification standard and better prepare for opportunities as a third-party certifier for the Small Business Administration. Aditi Dussault, former Director, Disability Supplier Diversity Program® & Affiliate Relations, U.S Business Leadership Network, will join WBENC in late May as our new Sr. Manager of Compliance. In this role, Aditi will manage the relationships with the RPO Certification teams and compliance with WBENC's certification guidelines.

Additionally, we are utilizing the strong project management skills provided by, Helen Avery, who serves as the new Executive Assistant to the Office of the President, as well as supports other departments in an array of project-based initiatives.

To address the feedback I have received regarding access to the office in DC and phone contact with staff, we have augmented our automated phone system. During normal work hours, Helen will answer the main line (202-872-5515) directly. She is located at the front desk in the lobby to ensure your access into our secured office space. Finalization of several phone routing and voice mail items will occur during May to ease your automated access to staff members. These are small changes, but changes that will improve your access to us and our ability to better serve you.

Strategic Plan
Thank you for the many positive comments I have received relative to the April 2011 Edition of the President's Video Message located at Progress to the strategic plan includes the following:

  • The framework of the strategic plan supporting "WBENC's Roadmap to 2020" will be based on the thematic concept, "We Are WBENC… Contributing to the Success of Women's Business Enterprises through 'WBENC's Roadmap to 2020." "We Are WBENC" highlights how all of our stakeholders play a key role in the success of WBENC and support our prominence as the leading provider of certification for women's business enterprises, position us soundly as a key facilitator to support the sourcing needs of our Corporate Members, and advance our contribution to the growth of the nation's economy and job creation by providing women's business enterprises with access to viable business contacts and opportunities.
  • To provide appropriate financial stewardship for many of our strategic growth items, "We Are WBENC" will be utilized as a campaign created to, not only demonstrate the value WBENC provides to its constituents, but also to address ways to help us better serve you. Under "We Are WBENC," we also specify the unfunded 2011 initiatives and provide our constituents with options that will require additional funding support in 2011 and 2012. I am pleased to share that our very first contributions to the "We Are WBENC" strategic fund were contributed by AT&T, BP America, and The ROBART Companies. A special "thank you" to each of these companies for getting us started. These contributions are being used to specifically support our first step toward the enhanced use of technology, allowing us to launch our social media entry, virtual presence in the women's social network community, and overall brand heightening efforts. (Click here for more information on the current "We Are WBENC" funding opportunity to support the Technology – Social Media Initiative.) Additional strategic funding options will be announced in July 2011.
  • The outline of the new Strategic Plan specifying the guidelines for each section is being reviewed by the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors. The full Board of Directors will provide key guidance and input to each section during the Board of Directors meeting to be held in Las Vegas, NV on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Shortly after WBENC's National Conference & Business Fair, we will begin our next step which is to finalize and announce the overall strategic charter governing the teams that will determine the direction to be taken on each strategic section. On behalf of the Board, Cheryl Stevens, Vice President of Supplier Diversity, Energy Future Holdings and member of WBENC's Executive Committee and I will be the Executive Sponsors of this work. For those of you who already volunteered to participate in our strategic planning process, you will receive more information around June 1. Anyone else who still wants to volunteer and to participate in any way should send an e-mail to specifying your area of interest.

National Conference & Business Fair
Significant effort has been focused here due to the many deadlines awaiting decisions of the new WBENC leader. I believe we have taken "our new energy" and coupled it with the thoughtful planning of:

  • our Co-Chair Sponsors
  • Host Council WBEC-West and the WBE Host Committee
  • our staff and committees, and
  • the generosity of our 104 sponsors that cause our network to thrive. This year, we already have the highest number of WBE sponsors than we have had in the past five years.

Previously, as a Corporate Member, I always loved the environment of the National Conference & Business Fair. Today, as the leader of WBENC, I am working to ensure that the many people involved in creating this Conference provide the very best speakers, workshop content, MatchMaker and networking opportunities, meaningful recognitions and YES -- a little bit of fun! I believe you will agree with me that everyone involved has created the very best experience for our members and attendees.

I look forward to sharing more information regarding our progress next month.

Don't Miss Two Great WBENC Executive Education Opportunities to Help Grow Your Business This Year! Deadlines: May 27 and June 30.

WBENC-Certified WBEs have access to two executive education programs that can take your business to the next level.
  1. The Dorothy B. Brothers Executive Scholarship Program provides the recipient with the opportunity to select an executive education program and school of her choice. WBENC will pay up to $11,000 for the WBE to attend one program. For further information or to apply for the scholarship, please click hereScholarship applications are due May 27.
Scholarship Testimonial:
After being awarded the Dorothy B. Brothers Executive Scholarship, I enrolled in Pricing Strategies and Tactics at Kellogg School of Management. This type of educational training aided me in staying on top of the rapid growth and expansion that my company continues to experience. Having 3-5 days away from the office where I could totally immerse myself without the distractions of the day-to-day operations allowed for growth and fresh thinking. Being exposed to other entrepreneurs and having the opportunity to share and draw on their experience led to personal and professional development.
- Johnette van Eeden, Lone Star Screening
  1. The Tuck-WBENC Executive Program, Brought to you by IBM is a one-week intensive program held October 2-7, 2011 in Palisades, NY. The cost to attend the program is $3,000 which is well below the market value. If you would like to be considered for a scholarship, you may apply for the Dorothy B. Brothers Executive Scholarship, noted above, in addition to applying for the Tuck program. For further information or to apply, please click hereTuck Applications are due June 30.
Tuck Testimonial:
Attending the Tuck-WBENC Executive Program in October of last year was a career changing week for me and my business. In the six months since participating in the program, I am tracking to achieve my annual sales targets and am working on developing a new product to launch by the end of the year to compliment our consulting services. The Tuck program elevated my awareness of the importance of targeted strategy development, alignment of goals and resources; and financial discipline which my company has used to engage new clients, lengthen our presence in the supply chain and enabled us to capitalize on financial strength and invest more productively. As a WBE, this is a gift you owe yourself.
– Joy E. Taylor, TayganPoint Consulting Group, LLC
Note: All interested WBEs are highly encouraged to apply for these programs. Even though both of these programs list sales or revenue minimums (see program web pages noted above), it is possible that WBEs outside of the range requirement may be considered.

Roz Alford, Principal of ASAP Solutions Group, was recently awarded the Women Presidents' Organization (WPO) President's Award, in recognition of her support of and commitment to the WPO and women entrepreneurs. "As a member of the platinum and Zenith group, Roz is an exemplary WPO member who carries the vision and mission of the WPO forward," said Marsha Firestone, Ph.D. President and Founder of the WPO.

The presentation took place at the 14th annual Women Presidents' Organization conference attended by more than 500 successful women entrepreneurs. This event featured keynote speakers, workshops and an awards presentation honoring the winners of the 4th annual 50 Fastest-Growing Woman-Owned/Led Companies in North America sponsored by American Express OPEN. The conference, entitled Grow Boldly, Lead Globally, was held April 27- 29, 2011, at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver, BC.

In 1989, Roz founded and is now co-principal of ASAP Solutions Group, an IT solutions pioneer. "I was so proud of Roz and her dedication to the advancement of women businesses through WPO," said Nancy Williams, Co-Principal of ASAP. "This was an exceptional moment for Roz and ASAP. I am proud to have her as my business partner."

In March 2011, Roz was appointed by the President to the National Women's Business Council for a three-year term. The NWBC is a bi-partisan federal advisory council created to serve as an independent source of advice and policy recommendations to the President, Congress and the U.S. Small Business Administration on economic issues of importance to women business owners.

The WPO is the premier peer advisory organization for multimillion dollar women entrepreneurs. Through the WPO, a diverse group of women presidents are able to tap into the collective wisdom of their peers and advance their business success. Misuse of WBENCLink Database!
While the WBENCLink database is an excellent strategic marketing tool to identify the supplier diversity contact of a Corporate Member, to find WBEs for partnerships, to purchase products and services; unfortunately, many WBEs are using it for the purpose of email blasts. Please note contact information obtained from WBENCLink is not permitted for use in any e-mail blasts. Examples of misuse include sending an email blast for the purpose of advertising or promoting:
  • A company, executive/employee from your company, or an event.
  • A product or service that is on sale or offered at a discount to WBENC Certified WBEs or Corporate Members.
  • A product or service offered by your company that would make a great gift for a boss or administrative assistant.
As of June 1, 2010, any WBE who continues to send out this type of email will receive a "cease and desist" letter from WBENC. If the WBE continues to contact WBEs for this purpose, their level of access to WBENCLink will be restricted to their profile only.

Questions about this policy should be directed to Susan Cates at 202-872-5515 Ext. 8100.

National Association of Minority & Women Owned Law Firms Requires WBENC Certification For Women-Owned Law Firm Members

In 2009, the National Association of Minority & Women-Owned Law Firms (NAMWOLF) Board of Directors adopted the requirement that all woman-owned law firms obtain certification as a Women's Business Enterprise (WBE) through WBENC in order to maintain and/or obtain membership in NAMWOLF. "The integrity of the WBENC certification process was extremely attractive to NAMWOLF and its corporate and public entity partners," said Jason Brown, NAMWOLF's Executive Director and General Counsel. "As an organization with national presence, it was imperative for us to establish a uniform standard to continually verify and certify the WBE standing of our woman-owned law firms." NAMWOLF also requires National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) certification for its minority-owned law firm members.

NAMWOLF, founded in 2001, is a nonprofit trade association comprised of a select group of minority and women-owned law firms who exhibit excellence in the legal profession. NAMWOLF's mission is to promote diversity in the legal profession by fostering the development of long lasting relationships between preeminent minority and women-owned law firms and private/public entities. NAMWOLF has 98 law firm members comprised of over 1,200 exceptional lawyers located in 30 states across the nation, and a membership covering a wide spectrum of legal experience and practice area expertise.

In addition to requiring WBENC certification, NAMWOLF uses a detailed vetting process to determine law firm admission, which can take several months. Membership criteria includes: excellence in quality, favorable client references, and a Martindale-Hubbell AV Peer Review Rating. This "AV" rating is the preeminent rating of a law firm as having met the highest professional standards. "NAMWOLF is not simply a network of minority and women owned law firms. Our members must be established as the best the legal profession has to offer, and this is why we require this standard for our members," said Brown.

NAMWOLF will exhibit at WBENC's 2011 National Conference & Business Fair, June 21-23 in Las Vegas, NV. In September, NAMWOLF will return to Las Vegas to celebrate its 10th anniversary at its Annual Meeting & Law Firm Expo. The Annual Meeting will feature motivational speaker Vernice "FlyGirl" Armour, America's first African-American female combat pilot, six continuing legal education courses, and an Expo of Law Firm Members and legal industry service providers.
