A Message from Linda Denny

In a recent news report, it was stated that Warren Buffet told his share holders "my trigger finger is itchy for acquisitions." As one of the most brilliant business minds and investors of our era, Buffet sends a clear signal that now is a good time for companies - large, medium or small - to compare their current capacities with their growth goals and to explore capacity development alternatives.

During WBENC's 2011 Summit & Salute to Women's Business Enterprises to be held March 22-24, I'm happy to announce that keynote speaker Alice Schroeder, Bloomberg News Columnist and author of The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life, will kickoff Wednesday morning's activities by speaking on Navigating and Profiting in a World of Changing Business Models. This is a prime opportunity to learn about business models used by some of the most profitable businesses in the nation.

Of course there are many requisites to consider in an acquisition or merger including: company cultures, profits, potential problems with costs being calculated incorrectly, and management and staff personality differences to name a few. Also, acquisitions and mergers usually require the ability to make a significant cash investment.

However, acquisitions and mergers are only two of several capacity development alternatives to consider as an entrepreneur explores logical or innovative growth. Other growth options to consider are joint venture and strategic alliances.

To help business owners learn how to effectively compete through joint venture relationships and formalized strategic alliances during our Summit & Salute, Benita Fortner, Supplier Diversity Director, Raytheon Company will lead a panel of experts who will speak candidly about what works, why it works, what doesn't work, and the subtleties of selecting the right company. Joint ventures and strategic alliances are two of the best paths for engaging major corporations and competing for larger contracts.

At WBENC, we take capacity development seriously and plan our event programming as a foundation to help educate and serve our constituents. As part of our 2011 Summit & Salute program, our National Conference, and throughout the year, we are diligent in sharing trends and business forecasts to make sure business owners are apprised of important information that may affect their businesses.

Also, through our formal and informal networking events, we bring women business enterprises (WBEs) together to ignite potential alliances that serve the WBE as well as their customers and our Corporate Members.

Please accept my personal invitation to register for WBENC's 2011 Summit & Salute by visiting www.wbenc.org/summit-salute.

I look forward to seeing you and hearing what you've learned.

Best wishes,
Linda Denny
President and CEO

Call for Corporate-WBE Roundtable Volunteers at Summit & Salute

As part of WBENC's Summit & Salute program, a Corporate-WBE Roundtable Discussion will be held on Wednesday, March 23. For those already registered or registering to attend the Summit, WBENC is in need of Corporate and WBE volunteers.

At least one Corporate volunteer will be assigned to each table to serve as a facilitator for a Roundtable Discussion of two topics provided by WBENC. Approximately 20 minutes will be allocated to each topic. The corporate facilitator and other corporate participants will also be asked to provide their perspectives on each topic. No advance preparation is required by the corporate facilitator.

WBE volunteers will record each Roundtable discussion and serve as liaisons to WBENC. These Roundtable discussions will provide real time data for attendees and will be used to generate a white paper on "How Social Media is Changing Today's Business Landscape and is Being Used in Supplier Diversity." WBE volunteers will need to bring their own laptop with WiFi capability to the session. Wireless access and instructions will be provided.

A training call will be held in advance to familiarize volunteers with procedures and additional information. To learn more about becoming a Roundtable Volunteer, or to sign-up, please contact bcole@wbenc.org by Monday, March 14.

Misuse of WBENCLink Database!

While the WBENCLink database is an excellent strategic marketing tool to identify the supplier diversity contact of a Corporate Member, to find WBEs for partnerships, to purchase products and services; unfortunately, many WBEs are using it for the purpose of email blasts. Please note contact information obtained from WBENCLink is not permitted for use in any e-mail blasts. Examples of misuse include sending an email blast for the purpose of advertising or promoting:
  • A company, executive/employee from your company, or an event.
  • A product or service that is on sale or offered at a discount to WBENC Certified WBEs or Corporate Members.
  • A product or service offered by your company that would make a great gift for a boss or administrative assistant.
As of June 1, 2010, any WBE who continues to send out this type of email will receive a "cease and desist" letter from WBENC. If the WBE continues to contact WBEs for this purpose, their level of access to WBENCLink will be restricted to their profile only.

Questions about this policy should be directed to Susan Cates at 202-872-5515 ext. 8100.
