WBENC Approved as Third-Party Certifier for SBA WOSB Federal Contracting Program For some time, WBENC has investigated additional ways in which it can support its mission of leveling the playing field for women's business enterprises (WBEs) not only in the private sector, but also in the public sector. Now WBENC is at an historic moment and is proud to announce it will take its world-class certification into the government arena by delivering WOSB certification.
The Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved WBENC as a Third-Party Certifier - providing Women Owned Small Business (WOSB) certification - for the SBA's WOSB Federal Contracting Program.
The SBA WOSB Federal Contracting Program enables contracting officers to set aside certain contracts for competition among women owned small businesses (WOSBs) or economically disadvantaged- women owned small businesses (EDWOSBs) for the provision of goods and services to the Federal Government.
"We are pleased that the SBA, like our current corporate partners, recognizes the value and credibility of third-party certification," said WBENC President and CEO Pamela Prince-Eason. "Through the approval of third-party certification, the SBA has taken an important step in enabling women's businesses to effectively compete and win contracts with the government. We believe that this will lead to women's business growth and a positive impact on our economy."
As one of four SBA-approved third-party certifiers, WBENC is the leading advocate for and authority on WBEs for the nation's corporations. Its certification of businesses that are 51 percent owned, operated and managed by women, is accepted by more than 1,000 corporations representing America's most prestigious brands, in addition to many states, cities and other entities. Now it will also provide its world-class certification of women owned small businesses (WOSB) to government agencies.
In its role as a new third-party certifier of the SBA's WOSB Federal Contract Program, WBENC with our Regional Partner Organization network will introduce a Women Owned Small Business Government Certification (WOSBGC) Program.
Additional information and updates regarding the WOSB Program and WBENC's WOSB Government Certification Program will be provided by WBENC and its Regional Partner Organizations as we move forward.

WBENC's President and CEO Pamela Prince-Eason and Board Chair Laura K. Taylor, Pitney Bowes Vice President of Strategic Sourcing, along with Barbara Kasoff, President of Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP), held a press conference during the 2011 National Conference & Business Fair to announce that WBENC has joined the Small Business Saturday CoalitionSM. This is a national movement of small business advocates led by WIPP to drive consumers to shop at local merchants and small businesses on Small Business Saturday. This year Small Business Saturday falls on November 26th, the Saturday between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, during the heaviest shopping weekend of the year. |
By joining the coalition, WBENC and our network of 14 Regional Partner Organizations (RPOs) will engage not only our WBENC-certified Women's Business Enterprises (WBEs) who would participate as vendors on Small Business Saturday, but also its nearly 11,000 WBEs and 250 Corporate Members who could spread the word about the event and participate as shoppers.
"WBENC is proud to support Small Business Saturday, which will make an immediate and positive impact on the small business sector of our economy. Small businesses are a key source of innovation in this country, and it is vital that we support their growth," said Pamela Prince-Eason, President and CEO of WBENC, which is the leading advocate for and authority on women's business enterprises as suppliers to the nation's top corporations.
The Small Business Saturday CoalitionSM encourages local business owners to take leadership positions in their communities by raising awareness of the program in their regions. WBENC can perform a crucial role in using its national network to engage women's business to take these leadership positions.
WIPP, a nonpartisan organization and a strategic partner to WBENC, and its partners created the Small Business Saturday CoalitionSM to expand the reach and impact of Small Business Saturday. The coalition's mission is to inspire business owners and communities across the country to embrace Small Business Saturday and get the word out about the importance of shopping at small, independently owned businesses.
American Express, the founding sponsor of Small Business Saturday, created the program in response to small business owners' most pressing need: more demand for their products and services.
The impact that "shopping small" has on local communities is profound: for every $100 spent at a locally owned small business, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures, according to Civic Economics.
"We are proud to be taking Small Business Saturday to the next level by leading a community of likeminded small business advocates," said Kasoff. "We will mobilize our base, which are the small business advocates, owners and consumers in local communities around the country to encourage and promote small business shopping and to rally local communities to support local businesses on November 26th."

2011 Silent Auction Grosses $180,000 The Auction is always a highlight of the conference, but this year it was certainly a standout affair. Led by WBE Auction Chair, Rebecca Boenigk, the event grossed more than $180,000 in revenues. The proceeds support WBENC operations and Regional Partner Organization outreach to WBEs. We owe a special thanks to our generous Auction donors and to the numerous winning bidders whose participation ensured we met our goal. The potent combination of high-octane Power Lunches and unique gifts and services kept the bidding lively to the end of the evening.
If you attended the Tuesday Evening Welcome Reception, then you were one of the 1,000+ attendees having a terrific time networking with new contacts and catching up with peers. If you stayed past 8:00 pm, then you also experienced one of the Auction's more 'creative' moments. Moe Vela, undaunted by the dull roar of the crowd, took to the stage to promote his private workshop on doing business with the government. Formerly Director of Management and Administration for Vice President Joe Biden, Moe is a government insider whose expertise will be of incredible value to any business owner who wants to expand into the government arena.
When Moe stepped on the stage, not one admission had been purchased for his workshop. Five minutes into his high volume sales pitch, all 20 spots were sold and WBEs were clamoring for additional spaces. Proceeds from the workshop sales alone topped $30,000 and are part of the overall Auction revenues. WBENC recognizes Sharon Olzerowicz, CEO of Matrix Information Consulting, who encouraged Moe to organize what will certainly be an incredible opportunity.
Making Connections through Social Media at the WBENC National Conference & Business Fair
At this year's WBENC National Conference & Business Fair (NCBF), several new initiatives were taken to establish the event's presence on popular social media outlets. Led by Women's Business Enterprise Council-West (WBEC-West) Executive Director Pamela Williamson, Ph.D., Sr. Director, Business Development & Community Relations Tanya Hiple, and Social Media Manager Summer Sepulveda (Host Council to the event). This was the first WBENC Conference to have a strong social media presence.
As part of the social media strategy, WBEC-West provided a webinar prior to the event and assistance at both registration and during the business fair to attendees who were interested in "Getting Social" with WBEC-West. They had over 33,000 post views and 400+ post interactions on their Facebook page during the event. The 40+ business owners who submitted photos and answered the question of "Why are you attending the conference?" to win an opportunity to have "Coffee with a Corporation" stimulated over 1,000 interactions. The two business owners with the most interactions were awarded meetings with Nestle at the event!
On Twitter, attendees interacted at #WBENC2011. Users were tweeting updates from the events, quotes from speakers, tradeshow booth numbers and promotions, and much more. Collaborating with Nestle Director of Supplier Diversity Karen Blackwell, WBEC-West brought in Nichelle "Nikki" Fonville and DeAnna DuPree of Too Smart Girls, who conducted Twitterviews (interviews via Twitter) for the entire conference. WBEC-West went to great lengths to integrate Social Media into the WBENC Conference and the Twitterviews seemed like the perfect compliment. | | Pictured from left to right: DeAnna DuPree, Too Smart Girls; Summer Sepulveda, WBEC-West; Candace Waterman, WBENC; Martha Valenzuela (WBEC-West); and Nichelle "Nikki" Fonville, Too Smart Girls. |
Additionally, WBEC-West hosted a Social Media Meet Up, where location information was exclusively released through social media channels. The event was a great success because it allowed people to meet face-to-face after interacting online, and it reached maximum capacity!
At the WBENC exhibit booth, technology was provided by DELL to enable individuals to connect to the event on Facebook and Twitter. The real time updates were a fantastic way to keep up with all the business connections!
