President's Message from
Pamela Prince-Eason

               We are WBENC
Contributing to the success of women-owned business through WBENC's Roadmap to 2020!

WBENC's National Conference & Business Fair is just around the corner. We have a record level of attendee registrations and cannot thank our sponsors enough for their support which has allowed us to provide some of the best programming available at an event of this nature. The program is planned, the details are being finalized and just enough entertainment has been interjected to refresh all attendees as we move through our highly productive conference. Congratulations to all who have worked to put this event together.

I am pleased to update you on completion of my first Strategic Planning deliverable. After quickly, but thoroughly, assessing the organization, I have worked with colleagues from our various constituent groups to create a strategic planning process that has been accepted by the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors and will become actionable upon completion of the Board of Director Strategic Planning Workshop that is occurring on June 21, 2011. Ultimately, the end result, named "WBENC's Roadmap to 2020," will be the foundation for a new era throughout the WBENC network. It will provide direction to the organization, provide a method to measure our progress and will address issues facing, and opportunities available to, women-owned businesses over the next decade.

We have created a theme to communicate how - together - we will implement "WBENC's Roadmap to 2020": We Are WBENC!

"We Are WBENC" highlights how all of WBENC's stakeholders play a key role in each other's mutual success. Whether you are a Corporate Member, WBENC-Certified WBE, Regional Partner Organization, or strategic partner, we collectively benefit when we rally around an end goal and apply the full force of our intelligence, expertise and power towards achieving it. In this case, "We Are WBENC" conveys this effort and ultimately supports a greater good:

  • Growth of the nation's economy and job creation by providing women business enterprises with access to viable business contacts and opportunities.

Expect to hear from many of our Corporate Members, WBENC-Certified WBEs and Regional Partner Organizations at the National Conference & Business Fair as they share their stories of success and commitment to growing the economy through access to opportunities.

I look forward to seeing many of you in Las Vegas later this month.

WBENC has launched its social media initiative by reinforcing its presence on YouTube and establishing its official presence on Facebook. You are invited to like us on WBENC's new Facebook page and view us on WBENC's YouTube page. Take a few minutes to become a fan and a follower today!

Earlier this year, WBENC's Social Media Task Force, led by Cristy McCullough, WBENC Assistant Vice President, Marketing, Communications, and Brand Management, presented its findings and recommendations on the path WBENC should take in utilizing social media as a new communications tool. "Here at WBENC, we are appreciative of the leadership the Social Media Task Force provided in establishing WBENC's presence in the world of social media," said Pamela Prince-Eason, WBENC President and CEO. "Their time and input has been invaluable as we look at new ways in engaging constituents." The members of the Social Media Task Force include:
In addition to the work done by its Social Media Task Force, WBENC's initial venture into social media has been made possible by AT&T, BP America, and The ROBART Companies, which provided funding to ensure WBENC is able to use social networks as a strategic way to:
  • Engage and communicate with its constituents
  • Convey important messaging in a real-time environment
  • Build community through two-way dialogue
  • Stay on top of important issues
In order to maximize its social media efforts in promoting the Conference, WBENC partnered with the Women's Business Enterprise Council-West (WBEC-West), one of WBENC's 14 Regional Partner Organizations (RPOs) and the 2011 Host Council of WBENC's National Conference & Business Fair. WBEC-West worked with WBENC to promote its 2011 Conference in Las Vegas via Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and the WBEC-West Blog. In addition, WBEC-West conducted Social Media promotions, webinars, and podcasts. Onsite at WBENC's Conference, WBEC-West will also transmit real-time messages via Twitter using #2011WBENC, conduct Twitterviews, and staff a Social Media Center in the Conference Registration area to get attendees engaged.

You can count on WBENC to provide the latest messaging before and during WBENC's Conference, as well as post-conference highlights, photos, and video as they become available. In the future, you will be able to interact with us on LinkedIn and Twitter. Stay tuned for updates on Facebook.

WBENC Conference Co-Chairs are

2011 Silent Auction: Incredible Power Lunch Opportunities and More!

A Power Lunch is a unique opportunity for a WBENC-certified Women's Business Enterprise to sit down with a senior executive or executives from a Fortune 1000 company to share her expertise and learn about the company's procedures and operations. Many WBEs who have participated in Power Lunches call the experience a ‘game-changer.' This year, there will be more than 20 Power Lunches up for Auction on Tuesday, June 21.

One featured Power Lunch is the package that Ahold, TJX Companies, and Staples have created for a WBE whose services potentially meet a common need for all three companies.

Ahold, TJX Companies, Staples Power Lunch Package

Every business owner has three necessities: 1) FOOD for energy; 2) CLOTHING to look the part; and 3) OFFICE SOLUTIONS to keep the business going. Three Fortune 200 corporations, each located in BeanTown suburbia, have come together to offer an exclusive package deal. This spectacular offer includes the following:
  • One hour meeting with Staples purchasing executive(s)
  • One hour meeting with TJX purchasing executive(s)
  • One hour meeting with Ahold purchasing executive(s)
  • Round Trip Airfare
  • One Night Hotel & Parking
  • Car Rental for 2 Days
  • Dinner w/ Staples, TJX and Ahold Supplier Diversity Executives

This offer is exclusively for a service/not for resale WBE. Thus, as you consider this package deal, determine if your business offering is a fit for all three corporations.

In addition to the incredible line-up of Power Lunches, WBENC has a number of terrific items this year, such as a one week stay at the incomparable Canyon Ranch Resort & Spa; a special getaway to a beach cottage in beautiful Del Mar, California; and tickets to a luxury suite at a Dallas Cowboys football game.

Become a donor and get recognized! It's not too late to donate and receive unparalleled recognition in front of an eager crowd of over 1,000 individuals. WBENC is seeking donations of items that generate excitement, great interest, and great bids. Specifically, WBENC is looking for trips, air travel, hotel stays, tickets to sporting events, jewelry, money, unique meetings with celebrities or government officials, power lunches with corporate executives, electronics, and much more.

WBENC appreciates your generosity and looks forward to any donation with a minimum value of $250. Your Auction donation may be tax deductible. Proceeds from this event support the programs and services that are provided by WBENC and its 14 Regional Partner Organizations.

Corporate Members Can Still Register for ISM CPSDTM Exam.

Stand out from your peers by completing the CPSD™ Exam offered onsite at WBENC's 2011 Conference. Register now to test on June 24, 2011, in Las Vegas, for the Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) new supplier diversity designation.

Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), along with Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM) have arranged a unique opportunity for members of either organization to take the new Certified Professional in Supplier Diversity™ (CPSD™) Exam following the WBENC 2011 National Conference & Business Fair, to be held June 21-23, 2011 in Las Vegas.

The new CPSD™ designation launched by ISM is developed for supply management and supplier diversity professionals who want to strengthen their knowledge and enhance their credentials in the field of supplier diversity. The CPSD™ Exam covers the major areas of supplier diversity and supply management. WBENC has been instrumental in working with ISM to include diversity subject matter experts in the development of the new designation.

As a supporter of the new CPSD™ program, WBENC has arranged for the CPSD™ Exam (one of two exams required for applying for the CPSD™) to be available for members on Friday morning, June 24, 2011 in Las Vegas.

"WBENC is proud to offer our Corporate Members access to this new Certified Professional in Supplier Diversity™ credential. We believe it is important to recognize professional expertise in the area of corporate supplier diversity and are pleased that this certification will convey that knowledge in the business community," said WBENC President and CEO Pamela Prince-Eason, who is also an ISM Certified Professional in Supply Management® (CPSM®).

"My participation with ISM and obtaining the CPSD certification has resulted in many benefits, said Dwan H. Armstrong, Clorox senior manager of Supplier Diversity, who recently achieved the designation of Certified Professional in Supplier Diversity (CPSD) by ISM. "First, it tells suppliers that diversity is a priority within Clorox, and that we expect our suppliers to support diversity within their own organizations. Second, the CPSD lends credibility to our Supplier Diversity Initiative nationwide. It also has helped me to gain additional Supplier Diversity Advocates in the sourcing organization. Finally, it provides a resource pool of best practices with diversity professionals."

The registration fee for the onsite CPSD™ Exam at the WBENC Conference is US$180. Non-ISM members who register at the special rate of US$180 will save US$85 from the normal non-member rate. For more information on the CPSD™ Program, CPSD™ Exam specifications, and specifics on the onsite CPSD™ Exam scheduled for Friday, June 24, 2011 in Las Vegas, visit

5 Ways the Tuck-WBENC Executive Program Can Help WBEs
Application Deadline: June 30

We have all heard it before: "I just don't have the time to be away from my business for a week." Although it is challenging to prepare for a week away from day-to-day activities, a week with Tuck can prove to be the most transformative for your business. Think of it this way: It's not time away from your business…it's time to work on your business.

Here are 5 ways that the Tuck program can help you work on your business, along with testimonials from WBEs who have attended the program:

1. Implement a customer-oriented management strategy.

"Going through the Tuck program was valuable beyond words. On a marketing level, I have been able to define how we are different from our competition while positioning ourselves in a global market." – Caren Scheitzer, Creative Resources Agency

"I have been able to validate my mission…and quantify the value of my corporate differentiators." – Claudia Mirza, Akorbi Language Consulting

2. Utilize market-based strategy and superior execution.

"In the six months since participating in the program, I am tracking to achieve my annual sales targets and am working on developing a new product to launch by the end of the year to compliment our consulting services. The Tuck program elevated my awareness on the importance of targeted strategy development, alignment of goals and resources."
– Joy E. Taylor, TayganPoint Consulting Group, LLC
3. Strengthen your financial knowledge to grow your business

"Tuck really helped me to prioritize. It enhanced my knowledge of financial matters, and changed the way I run my day." – Patti Winstanley, Aztec Promotional Group

"This intensive program gave me the tools needed to clearly understand day to day financial operations while planning for growth."
– Caren Scheitzer, Creative Resources Agency

"They inspired new ideas that have helped nearly double my revenues in less than a year!" – Leah Brown, JD, CHC, A10 Clinical Trials, Inc.

4. Leverage Your Network.

"I was able to connect with other successful women business owners, which has led to new opportunities to work together, supporting each other's business and pitching new collaborated projects to potential and existing clients. The connections that have grown from this opportunity are endless, and I would recommend the Tuck program to other CEOs who wish to form a peer group or expand their networking opportunities." – Sharon A. Davison, Ph.D., Red Sky Blue Water

"I enjoyed the opportunity to expand my network and develop a number of mutually beneficial business relationships; as well as some lasting friendships." – Dianne Ferguson, eXtyr, LP

"The caliber of women that I met and learned from will be lifelong friends as we continue to grow and learn together.
" – Caren Scheitzer, Creative Resources Agency

5. It's a Game-changer.

"…without a doubt, this training has been the most enriching educational experience in my life!" – Claudia Mirza, Akorbi Language Consulting

"There's simply one word for the strategies you learn, relationships you build and results you experience…priceless!" – Jennifer D. Collins, The Event Planning Group, LLC

"The impact both to my business and to me personally was amazing. Six months after Tuck, I am looking at a vastly changed business structure." – Lynn Griffith, CMP, Welcome Events

"Attending the Tuck-WBENC Executive Program in October of last year was a career changing week for me and my business. As a WBE, this is a gift you owe yourself." – Joy E. Taylor, TayganPoint Consulting Group, LLC

The Tuck-WBENC Executive Program, Brought to you by IBM is a one-week intensive program held October 2-7, 2011 in Palisades, NY. The cost to attend the program is $3,000 which is well below the market value. For further information or to apply, please click here. Tuck Applications are due June 30.

Misuse of WBENCLink Database!
While the WBENCLink database is an excellent strategic marketing tool to identify the supplier diversity contact of a Corporate Member, to find WBEs for partnerships, to purchase products and services; unfortunately, many WBEs are using it for the purpose of email blasts. Please note contact information obtained from WBENCLink is not permitted for use in any e-mail blasts. Examples of misuse include sending an email blast for the purpose of advertising or promoting:
  • A company, executive/employee from your company, or an event.
  • A product or service that is on sale or offered at a discount to WBENC Certified WBEs or Corporate Members.
  • A product or service offered by your company that would make a great gift for a boss or administrative assistant.
As of June 1, 2010, any WBE who continues to send out this type of email will receive a "cease and desist" letter from WBENC. If the WBE continues to contact WBEs for this purpose, their level of access to WBENCLink will be restricted to their profile only.

Questions about this policy should be directed to Susan Cates at 202-872-5515 Ext. 8100.
