The Roadmap to 2020 is a collective effort of many individuals, organizations (including WBENC), government agencies and supportive corporations to identify a strategic path forward for the next 10 years that will meet the needs of a growing community of women's businesses. Introduced at WBENC's 2010 National Conference and Business Fair in Baltimore, and authored by Virginia Littlejohn (WBENC's 2009 Applause Award winner), the collaborative work that led to the final Roadmap took almost two years.

The Roadmap calls for collaborative action by government policymakers, women business owners and their associations, researchers and corporate, academic and foundation stakeholders in six thematic areas:

  1. Measuring Economic Impact and Job Creation;
  2. Entrepreneurial Training and Support for Growth and Diversity;
  3. Innovation and Technology;
  4. Capital: Fuel for Growth;
  5. Accessing Markets;
  6. Building the Movement.

The Roadmap to 2020 is in itself a "big idea". The untapped potential of women-owned firms is equivalent to the discovery of an entirely new technology or the birth of an industry, which gives us the opportunity to create millions of new jobs and add trillions of dollars to the GDP. To make this happen we must:

  • Embrace an agenda focused on innovations and strategic growth initiatives;
  • double our efforts to identify and tackle obstacles and gaps in our infrastructure;
  • leverage the wide range of resources available in our stakeholder community;
  • And collaborate!

WBENC must continue in its leadership role if we are going to see the strategies laid out in the 72 pages of The Roadmap become reality. We will lead the "Access to Markets" initiatives and build our educational efforts to support established women-owned firms in growing their business capabilities and capacity in sustainable ways. It will take collaboration between all WBENC constituents and our "cast of thousands" of WBE companies, corporations and Regional Partner Organizations to make it a reality. I challenge you to join me in the effort!

New WBENCLink Version 3 Launched September 1, 2010!

What Does V3 Mean for You and Your Company?
The new version of WBENCLink was launched on Wednesday, September 1, 2010. While the new version of WBENCLink has several new search capabilities as a result of adding several new questions, the biggest change is the ability for WBEs to edit all sections of their profile that previously could not be accessed. In reviewing WBE profiles, it was determined that many had incorrect or missing information in their profile as a result of transferring from our previous provider to our current provider, CVM Solutions.

In addition, many WBEs have information that does not properly capture their company's true capabilities. To rectify these issues, WBEs will be allowed to edit all sections of their profile during recertification with the exception of company legal business name, tax ID and owner contact name. This will allow WBEs to create an online resume that highlights their company's current capabilities in the best light possible. Initially, a WBE's online profile serves as her company's application. However, once a WBE is certified, her company's profile becomes the company's online resume and first chance to make an excellent impression!

WBEs whose certifications expire by the end of 2010 will have the ability to update their companies' profiles during the recertification process. Also, WBENC is working with our host provider, CVM Solutions, to develop a plan that will allow all WBEs the opportunity to update their companies' profiles prior to recertification. Once the details have been finalized, all WBES will be contacted via email from wbenclink@cvmsolutions and the WBE's Regional Partner Organization.

In the interim, WBEs can get ready for recertification by.
  • Logging in to her company's current profile on WBENCLink.org and printing the current Summary View. The Summary View link can be found under the General tab.
    • Examine it for content, making a note of any missing or incorrect information as well as spelling, punctuation, grammar and capitalization rules.
    • Did you use "N/A or same" for question fields that were not applicable? If so, remove your answer and leave those questions blank.
    • In addition, pay special attention to the following questions/sections of the profile:
      • "Doing Business As" (DBA)—You will now be able to list a DBA name in WBENC Link and have it show on your certificate. (A DBA is an assumed name that the WBE's customers know you by. It is not your legal business name, but shares the same tax ID).
      • Industry Classification—Many WBEs have an incorrect industry classification as a result of transferring from WBENC's previous database to the current system. Others had to choose "professional services" due to a lack of adequate descriptions. To remedy this, a new list of choices is now available. Click here to view list of classifications.
      • Gross Revenue: WBEs should check to see if the Gross Revenue listed in their profile is equal to the amount shown on their tax returns for the appropriate year. When updating this section, use whole numbers only as the system does not accept decimals and could cause a WBE's revenues to be exaggerated.
      • NAICS Codes: WBEs should verify the code(s) listed are a true fit for their company. If additional codes are required, go to http://www.census.gov/eos/www/naics/ and search using the 2007 search field.
      • SIC Codes have been replaced with the UNSPSC Code System. The United Nations Standard Product and Services Codes (UNSPSC) is a global code system that is being used by many U.S. corporations. It allows for a very detailed description of the product(s) or service(s) a WBE's company provides. To search for the code(s) that best fit the capabilities of a WBE's company, go to http://www.unspsc.org/ and search using the keyword search field.
      • Product/Service Specific Description in WBENCLink: Most corporations conduct searches for WBEs by using key words. WBEs should enter a list of buzzwords, separated by a semicolon in this section. A total of 500 characters can be entered.
      • Real Estate Section: Does the list contain all of the WBE's locations?
      • Management Section: Many WBEs are missing information on their management page. All information that is missing or requires correction must be input during recertification,
For more information regarding the reasons for the changes and a current list of questions appearing in the WBE's profile, please visit the Recertification page and click the link for Certification Application Questions. This list contains the questions as well as a brief explanation of how to answer each question.
