Creating Opportunities …Recognizing Excellence

I have always liked WBENC's tagline "Creating Opportunities …Recognizing Excellence." In four words, it captures much of what WBENC is all about. As a way of carrying out the "Creating Opportunities" part of our tagline, we chose "The Opportunity Connection" as our theme for 2010, which focuses on our efforts to connect WBEs and Corporate Members, providing them the opportunity to do business with each other. MatchMaker365 is our latest effort to facilitate these connections, not to mention the Summit & Salute March 24-25, and the upcoming Women in Business National Conference and Business Fair (WIB2010), June 22-24 in Baltimore, MD.

"Recognizing Excellence" is an important element of WBENC's vision. Recently, WBENC announced that 21 companies have been selected as "America's Top Corporations for Women Business Enterprises", a hard won and much valued recognition. The WBENC Top Corporations recognition provides a way to acknowledge and promote supplier diversity best practices and the resulting contract development opportunities for WBEs. This year, WBENC will produce a white paper to share the best practices that are common to the programs of all our Top Corporations so that all may benefit.

Each year, WBENC presents the Applause Award to recognize exceptional accomplishments that expand opportunities for women's business enterprises on a national and international level while furthering WBENC's mission for breaking down barriers for WBEs. Award recipients are selected based on their impact on the growth of WBEs; creation of policies, procedures, or initiatives that increase opportunities for WBEs; and innovative and inspirational leadership on their behalf.

The Chair of WBENC's Board of Directors selects the recipient of the William J. Alcorn Leadership Award, named in honor of our first Board Chair, Bill Alcorn, who provided leadership in various roles from WBENC's founding in 1997 until his retirement from J.C. Penney Company in 2008. The Alcorn Award recognizes individuals that have provided long-term, outstanding leadership. Barbara Carbone, KPMG, was the first recipient in 2009.

Every year, a Woman Business Enterprise Star is selected by each Regional Partner Organization (RPO) and honored during the annual WBENC Salute to Women's Business Enterprises (March 25). These outstanding WBEs symbolize all of WBENC's WBEs, and after specialized training that we provide, become spokespersons to the media for WBENC throughout the year. In our eyes, they truly are "Stars!"

These are the most significant opportunities for recognition through WBENC, but there are many more provided by our RPOS, Corporate Members, and other affiliated organizations. We invite you to join us in celebrating the achievements of all the companies and individuals that we recognize at the Salute and during the Thursday night Tribute Dinner at WIB2010. Together, we will continue to make our tagline "Creating Opportunities ….Recognizing Excellence" come to life.



America's First Women Entrepreneurs

Women's History Month gives us pause to remember the many women whose shoulders we stand on and to learn of their many accomplishments. Women have been entrepreneurs from the earliest times – from Elizabeth Glover who started the first printing business in this country (her husband died en route from Europe) and published the first book in the colonies to Mary Katherine Goddard who lived in Baltimore and became the first female postmaster in colonial America but more importantly, first published the names of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Or that as a teen, Eliza Pinckney increased indigo production used in fabric dying by 2,500% in just two years or Madame C. J. Walker who turned hair products into a million dollar industry.

The National Women's History Museum (NWHM) affirms the value of knowing women's history, illuminates the role of women in transforming society and encourages all people, women and men, to participate in democratic dialogue about our future. Women's history is America's history.

Women's history is largely missing from the textbooks used in classrooms today. Only one out of 10 historical figures in history textbooks is a woman. In an effort to disseminate the amazing stories and achievements of women, NWHM has created 18 cyberexhibits on a wide range of topics—from Chinese American Women, to Women in the Progressive Era, to Female Olympians — and NWHM will be launching several more exhibits this year.

Legislation has passed the House of Representatives to allow NWHM to purchase property next to the National Mall in Washington, DC and is currently awaiting passage in the Senate. NWHM will provide a home in our nation's capital to honor the many contributions women have made to our nation and a place where we can reflect on our past to provide a better future. WBENC Announces America's Top Corporations For Women's Business Enterprises For 2009

WBENC announced its annual selection of America's Top Corporations for Women's Business Enterprises, the only national award honoring corporations for world-class programs that create level playing fields for women's business enterprises (WBEs) to compete for corporate contracts.

"Our Top Corporations are world-class leaders generating growth through partnerships with women's business enterprises," said Linda Denny, president and CEO of WBENC, the leading authority on and advocate for women's business enterprises as vendors and suppliers to the nation's leading corporations. Katty Kay to Speak on Womenomics at 2010 Summit & Salute



Katty Kay, Washington Correspondent, BBC World News America, a nightly newscast airing on BBC AMERICA and BBC World News, will serve as a dynamic keynote speaker during WBENC's Summit & Salute to Women's Business Enterprises to be held March 24-25, 2010 at the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor, Maryland.


Kay is also co-author of The New York Times bestseller, Womenomics, the topic of discussion during the Thursday (March 25th) general session luncheon. In Womenomics, Kay shares, "America is on the verge of the biggest workplace revolution since World War II. Women are more valuable than ever on the job, and are literally changing the office to suit them. From their leadership roles and skills as managers to CEOs, women are significantly evolving our workforce as a whole."

Women are more inclusive, more focused on long-term results and, in many cases, better educated. But women don't want the same career track their male counterparts have carved. Katty Kay provides insight as well as shares her own personal stories so that audience members will understand:

WBENC's brand new website features WBE Power Profiles in its new Video News section on the home page. Now any WBENC-Certified WBE can be featured as a WBE Power Profile on WBENC's new website.

A special WBE Power Profile recording package is being offered to WBENC Certified Women's Business Enterprises (WBEs) attending the Summit & Salute at the Gaylord National Resort on March 24 & 25, 2010. WBENC Certified WBEs can schedule a video session to produce their very own WBE Power Profile to include a script review, a makeup session, a 15-minute coaching session, and use of a teleprompter.

Introductory Web Processing Fee
WBEs that opt to record a WBE Profile at the Summit & Salute are eligible to receive two weeks of web placement. Just pay a $1,000 processing fee, and get two weeks on the web for $1,000. That's right, as an introductory offer you get two weeks on the web for just $1,000. Video recording sessions are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Offer expires on March 25, 2010.

  • Always provide the legal name of your company and phone number in your email or phone message.
  • The support desk can provide only the user id for the company as passwords are encrypted.
  • Passwords can be reset using the log in box "forgot password" option on wbenclink.org. Note: the new password will be sent to the person the user id belongs to!
  • Only the owner can request assistance from support with a log in issue when the known user id and password still do not work. The request must be via email.
  • Changes to your profile that you can not make, must be submitted in writing by the owner to her assigned Regional Partner Organization as only they are authorized to make these changes. WBENCLink Database Training for Certified WBEs will be offered every Thursday in 2010. Exceptions are March 25th, June 24th and nationally recognized holidays that fall on a Thursday.

Each class is limited to the first 50 people who log in to the session. Therefore, it is not necessary to register for this training.
