The countdown is on!
WBENC's Women in Business National Conference and Business Fair (WIB2010) is just days away. Taking place June 22-24, WIB2010 will be held in Baltimore, MD. Johnson & Johnson and Omega World Travel are our co-chairs who will be joined by dozens of additional corporate and WBE sponsors and exhibitors.

I've been thinking about why a certified women's business enterprise (WBE) would not come to this annual event full of corporate and WBE prospects, in addition to great educational opportunities, and here are the only answers I can come up with:

  • Her company has all the business they can possibly handle for the next two years.
  • She already knows, on a personal level, the gate keepers and decision makers for every prospect company participating in this year's WIB2010 Conference.
  • She doesn't want to meet and find out about prospect companies not on her current list.
  • She already knows everything there is to know about the workshop topics.
  • She doesn't have time.
  • She doesn't want to spend the money.

If you can answer "Yes, that's true!" to every statement above, quit reading … but if you can't, it's time to rethink your decision not to attend.

Our theme is "The Opportunity Connection" for a reason. It describes what happens for both WBE and corporate representatives when they attend WIB2010. Most likely there is no other event you can attend this year that has more opportunities for you to meet and introduce your company to prospects you want to know. The Business Fair has over 330 exhibitors waiting for you to introduce yourself and your company. (Use our new "Map Your Show" tool on the website that enables you to pre-identify exhibitors and efficiently work the Business Fair.) We will host three different evening networking events that provide numerous opportunities for you to connect to those that might not be in a booth.

The keynote speakers, Shelia Johnson, Suzy Welch and Robin Roberts all have great insights and experiences to share. In addition, the four different educational tracks, each containing three workshops, will expand your thinking and give you new knowledge that you can apply immediately. The track topics are Health Care for Small Business, Government Procurement, Global Business, and a Corporate track focusing on supplier diversity best practices and more. (See the website for details).

Time? Money?
If your company needs more business, there isn't a better place for you to spend three or four days than at WBENC's WIB2010. An important consideration is comparing the money you spend to attend WIB2010 versus what you might spend calling on one prospect. There usually is little to no difference; and at WIB2010, you have the opportunity to speak with multiple contacts. So, the decision to attend or not attend WIB2010 is one of those situations where it's easy to be "penny wise and dollar foolish." That is why it's important to understand the value of the potential business opportunities that you may find at WIB2010.

Year after year, WBEs tell me they do most of their prospecting for new clients at WBENC's National Conference, and then spend the balance of the year following up. Sounds like a pretty effective use of time and money!

Women in Business 2010 is your Opportunity Connection. Register now and join in the celebration of WBENC reaching 10,000 WBEs, greet our international guests, learn something new, and come away with prospects you may never reach any other way!

I look forward to seeing you in Baltimore!

NOTE: Online registration ends on June 8, 2010.

Map Your Show Helps You Make Connections at WIB2010

Are you building your marketing strategy to prepare for the Women in Business National Conference and Business Fair?

The 2009 survey showed that 96 percent of last year's Exhibitors expect to have meaningful follow-up with contacts made during the Business Fair. To facilitate your success, WBENC has launched its interactive floor plan and agenda builder for WIB2010.

"WBENC's Women in Business National Conference and Business Fair is a tremendous opportunity to market your company and to meet contacts that are critical to business growth and business solutions," remarks Cristy McCullough, Assistant Vice President, WBENC Marketing Communications, and Brand Management. "We encourage our constituents to come with a contact strategy and capability statement in hand. Use the new Map Your Show tool to obtain important contact information in advance of the Conference."

As an Exhibitor, whether you're a WBE or a Corporate Member, the Map Your Show tool is another way to promote your company pre-, post, and during the conference. Plus, it makes it easier for those who are interested to find you on the Business Fair floor. You must sign in, create a password, and provide permission for your contact information to be promoted using this tool.

As a WBE proactively seeking business or a Corporate Member looking for suppliers to fill a specific requirement, start by clicking here to build your customized planner. Go to the Search the Show tab to select the exhibitors with whom you want to meet. Select them individually by name or as an industry group. The list of your targets will be listed along with their booth numbers and contact name to make your targets easier to find and to customize your contact strategy in advance. On the same page, you are provided the ability to e-mail the company contact to set up an appointment to meet while at WIB2010.

Under the My Show Planner tab, you have several options including the Profile Wizard, which will step you through the use of the different Map Your Show features. Select My Events to schedule meetings with the pre-selected contacts, make contact notes, and more. Those using Microsoft Outlook can easily transfer the scheduled appointments from Map Your Show to their personal calendar.

Finally, use the Map Your Show tool to schedule your entire itinerary by simply adding the sessions you plan to attend and any advance or on-site meetings that are scheduled.

Go to to register today. Contact Paige Adams, Director of Development, or 202.872.5515, x: 8020 to learn more about becoming a sponsor.

The Tuck-WBENC Executive Program, Brought to you by IBM

WBENC is pleased to present the second offering of Positioning for Growth, our advanced executive education led by top professors from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. Using the WBE's own business as the central case study, the advanced program will explore three alternatives for growing to scale: organic growth, strategic alliance and acquisition. Participants will develop a strategic growth plan for their own business, including plans for financing, marketing, innovation, expanding operations, negotiation business deals, shaping collaborative business relationships, valuing businesses that might be acquired – or valuating participants' own business if selling out is an attractive option. This year, the program will be held October 3-8 at the IBM facility in Palisades, NY.

In the fall of 2011, the original Building a High-Performing Business offering will return. This general management program is designed to help WBEs that are beyond the startup phase to assess, improve and grow their businesses. To survive and prosper in today's fast-moving, volatile business climate, WBEs must ensure they have all the essential components of a highly integrated business, such as: clear and focused strategy, superior value, optimal core business processes, motivated and empowered staff, and carefully managed relationships for long-term success.

For further information on this year's Tuck program, please see "Opportunities" on our website at Sign up now as space is limited and demand is high. For information on being a Tuck sponsor, contact

Misuse of WBENCLink Database!

While the WBENCLink database is an excellent strategic marketing tool to identify the supplier diversity contact of a Corporate Member, to find WBEs for partnerships, to purchase products and services; unfortunately, many WBEs are using it for the purpose of email blasts. Please note contact information obtained from WBENCLink is not permitted for use in any e-mail blasts. Examples of misuse include sending an email blast for the purpose of advertising or promoting:
  • A company, executive/employee from your company, or an event.
  • A product or service that is on sale or offered at a discount to WBENC Certified WBEs or Corporate Members.
  • A product or service offered by your company that would make a great gift for a boss or administrative assistant.
As of June 1, 2010, any WBE who continues to send out this type of email will receive a "cease and desist" letter from WBENC. If the WBE continues to contact WBEs for this purpose, their level of access to WBENCLink will be restricted to their profile only.

Questions about this policy should be directed to Susan Cates at 202-872-5515 ext. 8100.
