On July 15, 2010 the Census Bureau released the most recent data on small businesses in America. The number of women owned companies (51+ percent ownership and control) increased by 20.1 percent since the last business census in 2002. In 2007 (the date of the Census), women-owned firms held 28.7 percent of all non-farm businesses in the U.S., 6.4 percent of total employment and 4 percent of total receipts. The total number of U.S. businesses increased between 2002 and 2007 by 18.0 percent to 27.1 million.

Other highlights about Women Owned Firms from the 2007 Census included:

  • There were 911,285 women-owned employer firms (one or more employees other than owner), employing 7.6 million persons with a total payroll of $218.1 billion, an increase of 6.2 percent and 25.7 percent respectively from 2002. In 2007, these firms generated $1.0 trillion in receipts, an increase of 25.9 percent.
  • 31.9 percent of women-owned firms operated in the repair, maintenance, personal and laundry services industries and the health care and social assistance industries. The women-owned firms accounted for 45.2 percent of all U.S. business in these industries.
  • Wholesale trade and retail trade accounted for 36.2 percent of all revenues.
  • California had the most women-owned firms at 1 million (13.3 percent of all firms) with receipts of $181.5 billion (15.2 percent of all women-owned firm receipts).
  • Texas was second with 610,279 firms at 7.8 percent of the total, with $96.8 billion or 8.1 percent of receipts

So how do WBENC Certified women's business enterprises compare? Very favorably! We have actually seen steady growth, not just in the number of certified WBEs but in some of the averages of these companies. In January 2007, WBENC had 5,800 certified WBEs with an average of $7.6 million in annual revenue, 48 employees and 14 years in business. In June 2010, we celebrated 10,000 certified WBEs with an average of $8.3 million in annual revenue, 42 employees and 16 years in business.

Even though the business landscape has changed considerably since 2007, women business owners remain optimistic. There are several research studies that indicate women's businesses will be leaders in creating badly needed new jobs as their companies continue to grow and prosper.

WBENC is doing its part to help. We are making changes to the WBENCLink database that will make WBE companies even more visible. These changes include expanded industry codes that are much more definitive. We are adding the new NAICS codes, dropping the seldom used SIC codes, and adding an entirely new coding system; the United Nations Standard Products and Services Codes (UNSPSC), an international coding system used by an increasing number of corporations.

WBENC's new recertification application will require action on the part of each currently certified WBE, who will be contacted by their Regional Partner Organization with instructions on how to update their online profile.

All changes will allow a corporation searching WBENCLink to understand, in far greater detail, exactly what it is the WBE firm does. In addition, the new WBENC Certificate of Certification will now accommodate up to 35 NAICS and 35 UNSPSC codes instead of the current three. I know both WBEs and Corporate Members will be pleased!

WBENCLink Version 3—Re-Scheduled for Release in September 2010!

As a modification to last month's announcement, the new version of WBENCLink has been re-scheduled to be released in September 2010. The V3 release provides new functionality that provides WBEs the opportunity to list their companies' capabilities in a better light. For our Corporate Members, the new release will allow more search criteria increasing their ability to find the perfect WBE to provide products and/or services.

The V3 enhancement includes new questions and new choices for current questions; and also makes it possible for the WBEs to update most of the information in their profile during the re-certification process. Remember, your online profile with WBENC is your company's professional resume. It is only as good as the content in it!

Be ready for the release by doing the following:
  • Log in to your current profile on wbenclink.org and print the current summary view of your profile.
  • Summary View link can be found under your General tab.
Examine it for content, making a note of any missing or incorrect information. Pay special attention to the following questions/sections of your profile:

Industry Classification: Many WBEs have the wrong industry classification as a result of transferring from our previous database to the current one four years ago. Others had to choose professional services due to a lack of choices. Industry classification options in WBENCLink will change in September 2011.  View list of classifications.

Gross Revenue: Is the Gross Revenue listed in your profile equal to that shown on the tax returns for that year? The system only allows whole numbers, if you entered a decimal, it may have caused your number to be listed incorrectly. Be sure to enter accurate data from your tax returns. Do not enter zero ($0) in the Revenue field as many Corporate Members use "Revenue" as a search criteria. Zero ($0) may eliminate you from database searches.

NAICS codes: Do the codes on your summary truly reflect what your company does? An example of a wrong code would be "clothing wholesaler" when your company's core function is promotional advertising. Does your company sell clothes, yes, but would they sell clothes to a major retailer to put on their shelf, no. Therefore, "clothing wholesaler" would not be the correct code for your company. Also, take the time to verify that the NAICS codes currently listed in your profile have not change with the recent update by the government. The government changed the definition of many codes to something that no longer has anything to do with the previous description.  http://www.census.gov/eos/www/naics/ 2007 Keyword Search Field

SIC Codes are going away. Please identify the correct UNSPSC code(s) for your profile.

Product/Service Specific Description: Review your product/service description for keywords. Are your company's capabilities adequately covered as most searches are done using keywords? A total of 500 characters can be used in this section. Please utilize Microsoft Word or a comparable program to type your new list of key words. Microsoft Word (or a comparable program) allows you to perform spell check and character count. Your RPO can then cut and paste the key words into your profile.

Real Estate Section: Have you listed all the office locations for your company?

Management Section: Many WBEs are missing information on their management page. If you are one of them, you will want to make the appropriate corrections to each of the four sections.
  • Ownership: 
    • Is the percentage of ownership for each person correct and does it equal 100 percent
    • Are all owners, directors and officers of the company listed?
  • Management/Ownership in outside firm
  • Management Authority:
    • Are all owners who work for the company listed here? 
    • Are other key management personnel that have any of the authorizations listed shown here?
  • Ownership Contribution: Are all owners listed?
New Question you will want to answer:
  • What other certifications does your company have?
    • Examples: DOT, LEED, OSHA, etc.
Each WBE owner needs to examine her profile and provide the required information to her Regional Partner Organization (RPO), which will contact all WBEs in their region for information, as needed. Please wait to be contacted for this information as updating profiles can only be done by the RPO that processed the WBE's certification. Those WBEs with certifications that will expire in the next 180 days will be able to update their files during recertification and will not require the assistance of their RPO.

Training for the new Recertification Process will begin the last week in August and will target those companies that have the Recertification Application posted or who will need to recertify between the release date and January 1. The new functionality of the database will be addressed during the WBE WBENCLink Training offered every Thursday and also in the ongoing Corporate WBENCLink Training offered the 2nd Wednesday of every month. Dates and times for these training sessions are given in the WBENCLink Database Training article below.

Go for the Greens Conference

Go for the Greens 2010 is a business development conference for women entrepreneurs. This boutique event, open to only 250 attendees, offers exclusive access to companies, government agencies and nonprofits that can help women-owned business secure their largest, most profitable contracts ever.

Now in its third year, Go for the Greens is a not-for-profit venture operated by a volunteer team from organizations that include the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP), Executive Women's Golf Association (EWGA) and others. Initiative for a Competitive Inner City Presents a Double Call for Applications

Looking for options to obtain capital for a business venture? The Inner City Capital Connections (ICCC) is a free annual national program sponsored by the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City and Bank of America, that educates small and medium sized inner city companies about a full spectrum of financial options available to growing businesses. In addition, company-specific feedback is provided from seasoned investors about growth plans, business models and investment pitches, and how to present their companies to investors.

The program culminates in an event where companies have the opportunity to connect one-on-one with investors. Nearly 200 companies have participated in ICCC and have raised $335 million in capital. Over 85 percent of participants met at least one potential investor at ICCC

To qualify for ICCC:
  • Companies must be headquartered in or have 51 percent or more of their physical operations in an economically distressed urban area of the U.S. or have 51 percent of their employees located in an economically distressed urban area.
  • Companies must be a for-profit corporation, partnership, or proprietorships that have revenues of more than $2M in 2009.
To self-nominate or to nominate another company for the ICCC program, please click www.icic.org/iccc2010nom and follow the instructions. Multiple nominations can be sent in an Excel spreadsheet that includes the company name, address, city, state, zip code, email address and phone of the nominated companies to Hyacinth Vassell (hvassell@icic.org). Inner City 100. Another executive education opportunity includes the Inner City 100, which is a national ranking of the 100 fastest-growing companies located in America's inner cities. The Inner City 100 showcases the successful businesses and the entrepreneurs who are helping to transform the community by creating wealth for local residents. By leveraging the advantages of their inner city, winners have created 71,000 new jobs and employed nearly 100,000 people, 40 percent of which are inner city residents.

Inner City 100 Benefits:

Misuse of WBENCLink Database!
While the WBENCLink database is an excellent strategic marketing tool to identify the supplier diversity contact of a Corporate Member, to find WBEs for partnerships, to purchase products and services; unfortunately, many WBEs are using it for the purpose of email blasts. Please note contact information obtained from WBENCLink is not permitted for use in any e-mail blasts. Examples of misuse include sending an email blast for the purpose of advertising or promoting:
  • A company, executive/employee from your company, or an event.
  • A product or service that is on sale or offered at a discount to WBENC Certified WBEs or Corporate Members.
  • A product or service offered by your company that would make a great gift for a boss or administrative assistant.
As of June 1, 2010, any WBE who continues to send out this type of email will receive a "cease and desist" letter from WBENC. If the WBE continues to contact WBEs for this purpose, their level of access to WBENCLink will be restricted to their profile only.

WBENCLink Database Training for Certified WBEs will be offered every Thursday for the remainder of 2010. Exceptions are nationally recognized holidays that fall on a Thursday and September 30th.

Each class is limited to the first 50 people who log in to the session. Therefore, it is not necessary to register for this training. Note: If you choose to log in early to reserve your spot, you may do so. However, please do not phone in to the session until the class is due to begin as WBENC will be charged for this time.
