Women In Toys Empowerment Day 2016

David Gifford-Robinson, WBENC’s Director of Marketing, represented WBENC at the recent Women In Toys Empowerment Day in Dallas, TX at the World Trade Center.  The event kicks off the Fall Toy Market in Dallas, one of the two largest toy events in the US annually.  WBENC was invited by Walmart who is a longtime supporter and sponsor of the WIT organization and its events.

The WIT Empowerment Day is designed to support our female entrepreneurs as they develop and grow their businesses. Businesses that are owned 51% or more by a woman can pitch to Walmart as well as toy companies in hopes of licensing their product. Industry experts provide participants information on all aspects of starting and growing a business as well as providing them valuable connections.

The half-day event started with a working lunch.  This included a welcome by the WIT organization and opening remarks by Walmart’s Sarah Wilson, Director of Corporate Affairs.  A panel discussion followed featuring buyers from various categories at Walmart, and then a Financial Panel comprised of Indiegogo, JazWings, Bambini Partners, Star Funding, and the SBA.

The balance of the afternoon was devoted to 15 minute speed-dating style Info and Pitch sessions with a variety of retailers and organizations, including WBENC.  David Gifford-Robinson shared information on WBENC and our RPO network, the value of getting certified, and the Women Owned program.  The day ending with the participants gathering for a wrap-up and recap, followed by a Cocktail & Connections Reception.

The Fall Toy Preview show is held annually in Dallas, Texas at the World Trade Center, and is one of the two largest toy industry events.  Manufacturers and Buyers from across the globe come together to see what the latest, greatest and hottest new products might be.  They have to have their crystal ball handy – they are not buying for this holiday season, but for the following year and holidays (more than a year in advance in many cases!)

Congratulations to Deb de Sherbinin and Nancy Zwiers, co-chairs for Empowerment Day, and Mary Kay Russell, Executive Director of Women in Toys for another successful event.  Find out more about Women in Toys at www.womenintoys.com.
