WOMEN'S BUSINESS ENTERPRISE NATIONAL COUNCIL (WBENC) ANNOUNCES WILLIAM J. ALCORN LEADERSHIP AWARD

Washington, DC, June 10 -- In honor and recognition of the outstanding leadership and service of Mr. William J. Alcorn to the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), WBENC has established the William J. Alcorn Leadership Award. 
 
The establishment of this award was announced on April 30, 2008, by WBENC’s current Chair, Cheryl Stevens, Vice President, Energy Future Holdings, at a Retirement Reception held in Mr. Alcorn’s honor at the JC Penney Corporate Headquarters in Plano, Texas. Mr. Alcorn, Senior Vice President, Controller, and Chief Procurement Officer, retired in May, 2008 from J C Penney after thirty-seven years of service. 
 
The William J. Alcorn Leadership Award will be selected and presented by the Chairman of the WBENC Board of Directors, with input from Past Chairs and the WBENC Executive Staff. 
 
The William J. Alcorn Leadership Award will be presented to a WBENC member, whose leadership and participation has significantly contributed to the overall success, progress, and development of the WBENC organization. All WBENC members in good standing are eligible for consideration. The Award may be presented to an individual (corporate, regional partner, or WBE) or to an entity (corporate, WBE company, Regional Partner Organization), and will be presented as deserved, and not on a structured calendar basis. 
 
Mr. Alcorn served as WBENC’s first Chairman of the Board of Directors and served in that capacity from September 1997 to December 2000. Following his tenure as Chair, he remained a member of the WBENC Executive Committee serving in various roles including Vice-Chair and Treasurer until his resignation from the board in March 2008 due to his retirement. Under Mr. Alcorn’s leadership as Chair and as an Officer of the Board, WBENC has grown to over 244 corporate members, and nearly 8,000 certified Women Business Enterprises.
